Blue is very versatile in its shades and its impact. Consequently, it is most suitable as a background color for portraits. Each shade of blue emphasizes a different quality. A delicate light blue indicates clarity, vision, tenderness, and a refined intellect. Dark blue implies depth of thought. Both dark blue and a strong clear blue will attach a quality of sincerity and steadfastness to a person being portrayed.

The strong and dark blues are symbolically associated with intellectual and financial power and are very good for using as a background for portraits of senior executives. Incidentally, if their work environment includes this color, this would be a perfect natural background to use for their portraits.

When using blue for backgrounds it is important to take the natural colorings of the person being photographed into consideration. Naturally, blue eyes will be enhanced if the background is of the same color. However, complexions and hair colors play an important role when defining the ideal blue for the background.

A strong, clear blue is very expressive for a persons with dark brown or black hair. Black and blue have a very special relationship. They are the colors of the universe and when combined create expressive power and depth. These attributes will also naturally add depth to a portrait. If the person is wearing black and blue the effect will be augmented.

Blue is very attractive for someone with a dark brown complexion and brown eyes. Brown (a dark shade derived from orange) is complementary to blue and will therefore be subtly intensified when combined with any shades of blue. However, the darker and strong blues are usually most becoming.

All softer shades of blue are ideal for those with ash brown or ash blond hair and light complexions. A pure primal blue is too harsh and can be overpowering for such persons. However, as soon as this hue has been softened with white and black it is very becoming for their colorings.

A vivid turquoise blue background can be very flattering for someone with bright colorings, natural red hair or golden blond hair and a high-spirited personality. Incidentally, the painter, van Gogh, used turquoise blue very often as a background for portraits of people with these colorings, including portraits of himself.

Whenever you want to emphasize qualities such as reliability, steadfastness, concentration or clarity in a portrait, blue is certainly the ideal hue to use for the background.
